Now that the Peyton Manning sweepstakes is over for the Kansas City Chiefs, they are sitting pretty with more than $30 million to spend. I know fans are disappointed, but the chiefs have other needs that can be addressed with the money available. Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli are responsible for filling the needs that will push the Chiefs into first place of the division. It is strange that so many players do not have any interest in playing for Kansas City. Players such as Kyle Orton have decided to be a back-up somewhere else rather then compete for a job with the Chiefs. Something is seriously wrong in the front office.
The free agency signing of former Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt, only confirmed the departure of Brandon Carr. Today Carr signed a huge 5 year deal with the Dallas Cowboys along with Kyle Orton.Earlier this week, I believed the Chiefs should have took a hard look at signing former Cornhusker, Carl Nicks from the Bounty in the Bayou, the Saints. He has made annual trips to Hawaii since his rookie year. Though the Chiefs do not need a guard, Nicks versatility to play left tackle would be a major upgrade over current postion holder, Brandon Albert. However, Nicks inked up a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the riches contract for an offensive guard in the NFL. Now both of those guys are out of the picture, the Chiefs should look to make certain positions deeper.
The Chiefs need to look into finding decent backup’s to Tony Moeaki and Jamaal Charles. With both suffering injuries that sidelined them for the season, the Chiefs scrambled to find players to step up as substitutes. Another former Raider, Michael Bush would work well with Charles as a thunder and lightening combination that has become the latest trend throughout the league. A back up for Moeaki could come in the second or third round of the draft in Dwayne Allen from Clemson, LeDarius Green of UL-Lafayette, or Orson Charles of Georgia. All three are excellent receivers, in fact they all at some point in their college careers played the wide reciever position. The attribute that sets them apart is run blocking, which Allen has a huge advantage over Green and Charles. If Allen slips through the late end of the first round, the Chiefs should pick him up to have a tight end tandem comparable to Gronkowski and Hernandez in New England. It is upsetting to see guys get away from the Chiefs, it is good to see they are at least attempting to sign good players.
The Chiefs need to land these players in order to become a better team. They have to start spending money not to just compete, but because it will be required. As a result of the new collective bargaining deal, teams are required to spend at least 90% of the salary cap. So no more excuses to not go and get quality players, it is time to compete. Although fans don’t want to hear it, we are stuck with Cassel as the starting quarterback.
